Pope Benedict summarized this best when he said “Let us be quite frank: the ability to cultivate vocations to the priesthood and religious life is a sure sign of the health of a local Church.  There is no room for complacency in this regard. God continues to call young people: it is up to all of us to encourage a generous free response to the call.”

 

Our Vocation Office is doing many good things that will help identify and harvest       vocations to the priesthood. But I recommend adding one overarching annual long-range program – the Call by Name Program. I recommend modeling this program after the Annual Progress Campaign. It would be conducted each year – in October, which is vocations month. It would be conducted for two weekends and the talk would be done at homily time. 

 

The advertisement and preplanning would be modeled on the Annual Progress      Campaign. This program done year after year after year would raise awareness of all our parishioners of the need for all of us to look around in our family, in our parishes and in our schools and identify young people who should be called to serve. Making this Call by Name Program as successful as the Annual Progress Campaign should be a most cherished duty of every priest in the Diocese of El Paso.
