Father Richard "Rick" Matty of St. Patrick Cathedral, known for his dedication and work with immigrants in the community, died suddenly Monday evening in Chicago Illinois. He was 57 years old.  The Cleveland native first came to El Paso in 1986

It's difficult to put into words all the deep feelings we have of or friendship with Father Rick.    Wally and I were so honored to serve with him as funeral ministers. Father presided at my mother's and sister's funeral Masses both of which he made so meaningful with his personal touches along with his kind and understanding words.

We will cherish the evening at Pat and Kerry McCullough's home when Fr. Rick said Mass and renewed our 60th wedding anniversary vows.

We have special memories of the pilgrimages we shared with him, the dinners and, most of all, I will miss his good natured teasing. This doesn't even begin to tell of all our memories of Father Rick. He is resting in peace now with our Dear Lord but we will always remember him and we miss him so very much.  Jane & Wally Thomson Serra Members El Paso ,Texas.

Fr. Matty, a native of Ohio, was ordained on May 28, 1983 for the Society of Mary. He came to the Catholic Diocese of El Paso in 1986 and was the founding executive director for the Diocesan Migrant and Refugee Services.   In 1993, Fr. Matty was named the first priest of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini.  When Bishop Raymundo Pena moved from the Catholic Diocese of El Paso to Brownsville in 1995, Fr. Matty was elected as administrator of the El Paso diocese until Bishop Armando X. Ochoa was appointed in 1996.  Fr. Matty was appointed rector of St. Patrick Cathedral on July 1, 1997.  Fr. Matty's funeral took place on July 20 at St. Christopher Church in Rocky River, Ohio.  Many Priest and friends form El Paso went to his funeral.  An Amazing thing happened. A Parish member attending the funeral brought a jar of El Paso Soil to be buried with Fr. Matty.  Thank you! Memorial for Fr. Rick Matty {www.serraclubelp.com/news/memorial/fr.matty}
